Four Hospitals in Michigan Named “Top Hospital”

Elite Award Recognizes Excellence in Quality and Safety

NOVI, MICHIGAN, December 5, 2023 – The Leapfrog Group announced that four hospitals in Michigan have been named to its 2023 national list of Top Hospitals. The elite award is one of the most competitive honors American hospitals and surgery centers can receive in safety and quality. The winning facilities will be officially recognized today as part of Leapfrog’s 2023 Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner held in Washington, DC.

The four Top Hospitals in Michigan are:

•           University of Michigan Health, Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor – Top Large Teaching Hospital

•           MyMichigan Medical Center in Gladwin – Top Rural Hospital

•           Chelsea Hospital in Chelsea – Top Small Teaching Hospital

•           Garden City Hospital in Garden City – Top Small Teaching Hospital

The Economic Alliance for Michigan (EAM) is a Leapfrog Regional Leader since 2014 and is working with providers, purchasers, payors and patients in Michigan to drive safe, high-quality health care.

“When hospitals make mistakes that are preventable, who pays for it? The patient does. The employer who provides health benefits does. If all hospitals perform at a ‘Top Hospital’ level for patient safety, health care costs in this country would drop dramatically,” said Bret Jackson, President and CEO of EAM. “With less than three percent of hospitals in the United States earning a Leapfrog Top Hospital award – it truly is a high honor. Congratulations to the four hospitals in Michigan receiving this honor.”

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit watchdog organization that rates hospitals and ASCs on how well they protect patients from errors and infections, as well as the effectiveness of procedures and other care they provide. A total of 132 hospitals were selected as Top Hospitals, including: 8 Top Children’s Hospitals, 34 Top General Hospitals, 15 Top Rural Hospitals and 75 Top Teaching Hospitals. A total of 27 ASCs were selected as Top ASCs.

“The Top Hospital Awards are the toughest and most competitive awards in the industry, so Michigan should be very proud,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The EAM has been a strong leader working with local hospitals to promote and recognize excellence in the State of Michigan.”

The Top Hospital award is given to teaching, general, rural and children’s hospitals that publicly report their performance through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and meet the high standards defined in the Top Hospitals Methodology. This includes infection rates, maternity care and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors, among other standards.
