Karen Johnson

Karen Johnson, Director, Performance Improvement & Innovation for the Washington Health Alliance, is an accomplished healthcare leader with experience that spans traditional healthcare boundaries having worked with employers, health plans, providers, and health systems over her 30+ year career. Understanding the unique perspective of these key healthcare stakeholders allows Karen to serve as a bridge-builder and change agent. You can often find Karen coloring outside the lines and forging unexpected alliances with a singular mission in mind – to make healthcare work better for more people at a cost they can afford.

Karen’s leadership was integral to the development and launch of the first Patient-Centered Medical Home program and the establishment of Kansas City’s first risk-based commercial ACO contract. She co-wrote the successful Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) application for Kansas City to be selected as a Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+) region. This innovation program is estimated to bring as much as $50 million in new primary care payments to the Kansas City region over the course of its five-year duration. She brings healthcare stakeholders together to build understanding and challenge traditional organizational boundaries that serve as obstacles to realizing this vision. She is an industry leader who understands the importance of bringing claims and clinical data together from the business, policy, and technical perspectives.

Karen holds a Ph.D. in Health Policy & Management. She possesses a broad understanding of the complex healthcare ecosystem with specific expertise in value-based strategies, advanced provider payment models, primary care transformation, clinical data interoperability, healthcare systems, health policy, and international comparative studies.
