Leapfrog Announces Spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades
NOVI, MICHIGAN, May 10, 2022 – The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit representing hundreds of the nation’s most influential employers and purchasers of health care, driven in Michigan by the Economic Alliance For Michigan (EAM), announced the Spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.
The independent grading system assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the U.S. based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The EAM is the Regional Leader for The Leapfrog Group in Michigan.
The Spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades marks the highest amount of “A” hospitals ever recorded in the State of Michigan. In the Michigan region, 81 hospitals were graded, and 41 earned an “A,” 22 earned a “B,” 17 earned a “C,” one hospital earned a “D,” and no “F” grades were recorded.
Michigan ranked fifth in the nation for hospital patient safety, with 50 percent of graded hospitals receiving an “A.”
“Fifth in the country for hospital patient safety, with 78 percent of recorded hospitals in the state receiving an “A” or “B” grade is simply outstanding,” elated Bret Jackson, president, EAM. “Higher levels of patient safety in hospitals means fewer medical errors, which leads to lower costs for patients, their families, and employers. By using the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Michiganders can make the best selection for where to seek care.”
Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan Health in Ann Arbor, is one of only 22 hospitals in the country to have straight “A’s” since the inception of the Hospital Safety Grades in 2012.
Hospitals earning straight “A’s” since Spring 2019 include:
- Beaumont Hospital in Troy
- Covenant Medical Center in Saginaw
- Henry Ford Allegiance Health in Jackson
- Lake Huron Medical Center in Port Huron
- McLaren Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant
- Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville
- Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital
- St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital
- UP Health System in Portage
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated biannually in the fall and in the spring.
“Patients in Michigan deserve to know which hospitals are safest, so they can make an informed decision to protect themselves and their loved ones when seeking care,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We’re excited to celebrate those hospitals in Michigan that uphold high standards of patient care. This community should be proud.”
